The clutch and close shifting pattern are ridiculous in my opinion. I don’t know why you would put yourself through that.

Try driving an Ariel Atom, I went from 1st to 5th thinking I was going from 1st to 3rd. Tightest shift pattern I’ve ever seen.

actually, I don't really like the clutch in the FoST, its one of the reasons I own a FiST. The shifter is sublime on both STs though, one of the best FWD jobs going. Which 3-speed h-pattern vehicle? Is that a mustang I see in your avatar? No dogleg?

You want an awful clutch? Drive a 997 Carerra.
It’s like trying to fold cardboard with your left foot.

The clutch is ridiculous. Total clutch travel is like 6 inches, yet it engages fully about 2cm off the floor. The shifter is great, but a little rubbery during hard shifting (I’m on stock motor mounts). I can live with those issues, but I absolutely despise how heavy the flywheel seems. It takes way too long for revs to fall, especially for 1-2 shifts. It is a daily reminder that I own a gussied up economy car.
That being said, it is a great jack of all trades commuter car, and I love it dearly.

That’s not the flywheel...that’s part of the ECU programming...it’s apparently some emissions thing, keeps the throttle plate from slamming shut leading to some unburnt fuel. Tuners can take out the rev-hang.

I had the suspicion it was something like that. I guess that explains why revs fall so much quicker when you’re off throttle before the shift. Thanks for the clarification.

Never driven an Atom, but it sounds like you gotta get in the habit of letting the springs center the stick momentarily, then just push straight forward or straight back to grab 3rd or 4th.

Yeah I normally would but driving an Atom on track with the minimal driving experience I have is pretty frantic. I soon got the hang of it though.

On the 1st gen Focus at least, it actually is the extra-heavy flywheel.
